Tanita Tikaram (born 12 August 1969 in Münster, West Germany) is a British singer-songwriter known for her distinctive deep voice. Born to an Indo-Fijian father serving in the British Army and a Malaysian mother from Sarawak, Tikaram moved to England during her childhood and rose to international fame at the age of just 19. Her breakthrough came in 1988 with the release of her debut album "Ancient Heart" which sold millions of copies. Her greatest international success was the single "Twist in My Sobriety" which became a Top 10 hit across much of Europe, reaching No. 2 in Germany and Austria, No. 6 in France and Norway, No. 10 in Ireland, No. 22 in the UK, and No. 25 on the U.S. Modern Rock chart. Other notable hit singles include "Good Tradition" (UK No. 10), "Cathedral Song", "World Outside Your Window", "Only the Ones We Love" and "We Almost Got It Together". This song was released in 1990 from "The Sweet Keeper" and became a Top 40 hit in several European countries. It reached No. 7 in Iceland, No. 22 in Italy, No. 24 in Finland, No. 28 in Ireland, No. 34 in the Dutch Top 40, No. 40 in Belgium, No. 50 in Germany, and No. 52 in the UK. Her best-known albums are "Ancient Heart" (1988), "The Sweet Keeper" (1990), "Everybody's Angel" (1991), "Lovers in the City" (1995), "The Cappuccino Songs" (1998), and "loser to the People" (2016).
