Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), formed in 1978 in Wirral, UK, by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys, are pioneers of synth?pop whose blend of emotion and electronics influenced generations. Their early breakthrough came with “Messages” (1980), their first UK Top 20 hit, peaking at No.?13. In January 1982, they released “Maid of Orleans (The Waltz Joan of Arc)”, from their album “Architecture & Morality”. It became a major international success: No.?1 in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands; No.?4 in the UK, spending ten weeks in the Top?40; and also charting high across Austria and Switzerland. It became Germany’s biggest?selling single of 1982 with over four million copies sold. Other significant hits followed, such as “Souvenir”, and later US breakthrough “If You Leave” from the movie “Pretty in Pink” (1986). Watch also “She’s Leaving” on our Channel. This performance was recorded by the TROS TV program TROS Top 50 on July 3, 1980.
