Angélique Kidjo (born July 14, 1960) is a Grammy Award–winning singer, songwriter, and activist from Benin, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential global artists, blending West African traditions with pop, funk, jazz, and Latin influences. One of her breakthrough songs, “We We,” became a club and radio hit worldwide, reaching the UK Top 50 and charting strongly on US dance charts, helping introduce African pop to a broader audience.
Her 1994 breakthrough song “Agolo” addresses climate change and deforestation. “I wanted people to dance, but also to think,” Kidjo later said. “Agolo” became a worldwide hit, charting across Europe and the United States and earning heavy rotation on MTV. Kidjo has sold millions of records worldwide and earned multiple Grammy Awards. Beyond music, she is a prominent humanitarian and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. This recording is from Dutch program TROS TV Show and broadcasted on March 18, 1994.
